UAE Space Agency signs MoUs with Krypto Labs and Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub to boost innovation and investment in local space sector

24 October 2019

The United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Krypto Labs, the Abu Dhabi-based global innovation hub, and the Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub, the new e-commerce zone within Dubai South’s Logistics District. The agreements with both entities establish a framework for collaboration and the exchange of knowledge with the aim of increasing innovation and investment within the UAE’s space sector.

As part of the UAE’s long-term strategy to forge effective local and global partnerships to support the growth of the UAE’s space industry, H.E. Dr. Eng. Mohamed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, signed the MoUs with Dr. Saleh Al Hashemi, Managing Director of Krypto Labs and Tahnoon Saif, Chief Executive Officer from the Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub.

The MoUs were signed on the sidelines of an event held to announce the UAE National Space Strategy 2030 and the National Space Investment Plan. During the event, the UAE Space Agency outlined its aims to enhance the space sector’s contribution to the national economy, promote the UAE's regional and international presence in the space sector and encourage increased investment in the UAE’s space industry both domestically and internationally.

The MoU signed with Krypto Labs is built upon the foundations established between the two entities following the Agreement of Funding they signed last year. As an extension of that partnership, the MoU further outlined efforts to support and promote the diversification of the UAE economy through specialized initiatives and programs, which focus on supporting local entrepreneurs and innovators in the space sector.

In addition, the MoU saw both parties agree to collaborate in encouraging educational awareness of the space industry within the UAE through jointly developed programs and initiatives, especially those in relation to space technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship amongst UAE Nationals.

The agreement signed between the UAE Space Agency and Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub aims to facilitate cooperation between the two entities on strategies to attract space companies and investors and retain space related businesses within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub, as well as promoting the Agency’s projects and initiatives.

Commenting on the MoU signings, H.E. Dr. Eng. Al Ahbabi said: “These agreements fall under the Agency’s mandate and commitment as a part of the National Space Strategy 2030 to support local talents, cultivate their skills and encourage innovation. They are also in line with our own strategic objectives to develop the next generation of space pioneers, support scientific research and develop local space exploration capabilities.”

“Building relationships with the likes of Krypto Labs and the Mohammed bin Rashid Aerospace Hub is the result of our continuing efforts to support the growth of our local space sector, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the talent, infrastructure and opportunities available within the UAE space sector. Furthermore, such partnerships serve to enhance the UAE’s position as a competitive international hub for space business and innovative start-ups,” concluded H.E. Dr. Eng. Al Ahbabi.

Dr. Saleh al Hashemi, Managing Director of Krypto Labs, said: “We pride ourselves on this strategic partnership with the UAESA, which stresses the importance of cooperation and coordination between government entities and private sector organizations. We at Krypto Labs always strive to be in-line with the strategic vision of the National Space Strategy 2030 supporting the transition to a knowledge-based economy and positioning the UAE as a global leader in space sciences. It reflects in our efforts in contributing to the local space sector by fostering and supporting the projects of Emirati scientists and entrepreneurs whose innovations heighten and accentuate the UAE’s global standing as an international hub for scientific achievements and emerging startups.”

Tahnoon Saif, Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub, said, "We are very pleased to announce this strategic partnership between MBRAH and the UAE Space Agency, which demonstrates the common vision to bring further growth and development to the space industry. This new alliance is also expected to play a key role in reinforcing the efforts towards attracting more space-related businesses and investors into the UAE. We look forward to working closely together in achieving this vision."
