The UAE Space Agency is participating in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2019, the largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, which is being held from January between 12-19. Space exploration is a key pillar and theme of ADSW this year and the UAE Space Agency will showcase the large role space exploration, science, research and technology play in developing and enhancing sustainability around the world.

Held annually and hosted by Masdar, a Mubadala company, ADSW brings together key policy makers, entrepreneurs, industry specialists, technology pioneers, sustainability experts, senior dignitaries, and local community members, to network and discuss strategies and address sustainability challenges. ADSW is a demonstration of the UAE’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and the development of pioneering technologies and solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

His Excellency Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi expressed his delight at the inclusion of Space Exploration as a pillar at ADSW this year, saying that it is a reflection of the significant contribution space exploration, science, research and technology are making on the development of sustainability internationally.

Highlighting the importance of engaging future generations in space exploration and sustainability, H.E. Al Falasi said: “The UAE Space Agency’s work with schools and universities, in addition to its numerous educational initiatives, are centered on facilitating this vision of space as being fundamental to bolstering sustainability on Earth.”

“With increasing awareness about the environmental impacts of our actions, inspiring upcoming generations to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics – or STEM subjects - and facilitating their entry to the space sector is one of the surest ways of safeguarding our planet for the future,” concluded H.E. Al Falasi.

Commenting on the UAE Space Agency’s participation in ADSW, His Excellency Dr. Eng. Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of UAE Space Agency, said: “Being part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability week highlights our commitment to ensuring a better and brighter future for everyone. We believe that international cooperation and collaboration with institutions and experts from various fields is essential for the development of innovative solutions to the world’s sustainability challenges.”

Space exploration has already contributed significantly to sustainable development and the preservation of our planet, be it through remote sensing and Earth observation satellites, global positioning systems, or water and food conservation and recycling technologies. The UAE Space Agency’s short-term and long-term plans for exploring Mars and the outer reaches of space have a vital role to play in ensuring the sustainability of our plant.
