UAE Space Agency Discusses Opportunities for Cooperation with United Nations Development Program

Officials from the UAE Space Agency (UAESA), led by His Excellency Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, met with officials from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), led by Frode Mauring, Resident Representative of the UNDP office in the UAE, to discuss opportunities for cooperation between both entities.

During the meeting, H.E. Al Ahbabi briefed the UNDP on developments within the UAE space sector as well as the progress being made on a number of the Agency’s projects and initiatives. He also highlighted the Agency’s ongoing efforts to support and grow and the UAE space sector and enhance its contribution to global space exploration efforts and scientific research. Similarly, Mauring provided Agency officials with a comprehensive overview of the UNDP’s projects in the UAE and wider region, as well as discussing the opportunities for cooperation between the Agency and the UNDP.

H.E. Mohammed Nasser Al Ahbabi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, said: “Cooperation and collaboration are cornerstones of the international space sector and form an integral part of our work at the UAE Space Agency. Our discussions today come within the framework of UAE space sector’s strategic plan that focuses on building and strengthening international and global relationships and partnerships in the space sector as a part of its objective to promote the sector in the UAE.”

“Today we discussed the potential for cooperation between the Agency and the UNDP in the near future, and we are confident that the Emirati space sector can contribute greatly to the UNDP and other UN agencies, subcommittees, and projects” added H.E. Al Ahbabi. “Our capabilities in space continue to grow, as we develop and deploy world-class scientific and technological instruments such as satellites with communications, remote-sensing and navigation technologies. Our space science and research facilities are providing talented youth with the expertise and materials they need to tackle the major challenges of our century.”

The UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping them to achieve their sustainable development goals. In the UAE the UNDP supports national priorities including UAE Vision 2021, by sharing global expertise and best practices with national counterparts.
