In preparation for COP 28 and in collaboration with global space stakeholders
Dubai, March 17, 2023 - Aligned with the first official COP28 event, 'Road to COP28,' The UAE Space Agency hosted a successful "Lift-off to 1.5C" workshop in collaboration with industry leaders on March 14th at the Terra Auditorium in Expo City Dubai. The workshop aimed to foster coordination and collaboration with the space sector's climate action efforts, marking a critical milestone in the fight against climate change and the achievement of the 1.5C target.
"The impact of climate change on our planet and its inhabitants cannot be ignored. We have a shared responsibility to act now and take decisive measures to mitigate its effects. The workshop served as a reminder of our collective commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. It was inspiring to see key players in the space sector come together to exchange ideas, share best practices, and chart a course for the future. As we move forward, we must continue to prioritize collaboration and innovation to address this global challenge," said H.E. Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of State for Public Education and Advanced Technology, Chairperson of the UAE Space Agency.
"The UAE government has made sustainability and preserving the environment top priorities, reflected by launching the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative nationally. In line with this direction, the UAE Space Agency has launched several initiatives, projects and to ensure that we are doing our part and further driving the UAE's journey towards sustainability, as part of our dedication to leading the fight against climate change," said H.E. Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency.
The workshop provided a platform for industry experts, thought leaders, and key players to discuss the role of the space sector in COP28, global health indicators, confronting an age of change through science and research, and a hands-on workshop on API training and the use of satellite imagery.
During the COP27, the UAESA launched several initiatives, including the Space Data Center, a digital platform that provides access to space data to develop solutions for national and global challenges, and the Geo-Spatial Analytics Platform, which focuses on climate change, food security, and environment monitoring. Additionally, the UAE Space Agency launched the SAS Space Applications program and partnered with companies like Bayanat, Farmin, and 4 Earth Intelligence (4EI) to support efforts to fight climate change.
