Region’s First Young Space Leaders Advisory Board takes place at Dubai Airshow

16 November 2017

Some of the brightest space minds of their generation gathered today for the region’s first ever Young Space Leaders Advisory Board - an initiative launched by the UAE Space Agency and the Global Aerospace Summit.

The young minds convened at the UAE Space Agency stand at the Dubai Airshow to discuss the opportunities they see for the growth of the space sector, who inspires them in the industry and what they would like to achieve in the next ten years. The Advisory Board addressed the challenges and obstacles young students face and how they would believe they can overcome them.

The Young Space Leaders Advisory Board, composed of students and young professionals under the age of 30, was moderated by Alia Al Mansoori, who rose to fame in the UAE as winner of the Genes in Space competition. The event also included participation from Heyam Al Balooshi, Design Engineer at the UAE Space Agency as well as representatives from Yahsat and Khalifa University’s Masdar Institute and Petroleum Institute campuses.

Some of the key recommendations taken from the session included creating stronger cooperation between schools and the space organizations, as well as the need for more investment in scientific experiments and projects. There was a call for more educational tours in the region to create awareness around the sector, particularly focusing on areas that can support the growth of the industry such as agriculture, biology and physics. Growing the private sector presence within the UAE was also  raised as an important challenge to help create job opportunities for the future.

H.E. Dr. Mohammed Al Ahbabi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency commented: “This initiative comes as part of our commitment to inspiring youth and supporting them in learning and developing. Today we have welcomed some of the most talented and ambitious youth to look at how we can help them succeed and achieve their dreams. At the Global Aerospace Summit 2018 we will host a wider and more inclusive Young Space Leaders Advisory Board which will bring to light the challenges and opportunities discussed today on an official stage. It is an exciting time for our industry as we see more of our young citizens find their passions and follow them through space science and technology.”

Oisin Commane, Managing Director, from SMG Aerospace, organizers of the Global Aerospace Summit, said: “The Global Aerospace Summit brings together thought leaders from the aerospace, aviation, defence and space industries, alongside key decision makers and officials, giving them a platform to discuss a wide range of subjects. A major aspect of that is looking at workforce challenges and how we can prepare the next generation of engineers, scientists and industry leaders. Projects like this will help raise awareness of the industry and invite creative and ambitious minds to consider exciting career opportunities in these sectors.”
